According to Waterbury police, Shamar Atwater, a resident of Waterbury, was taken into custody on Friday morning, August 1, and charged with Carizma Fox’s murder.

Atwater was followed by Waterbury police to a residence in Watertown. He was apprehended without incident when officers and Watertown police executed a search warrant at the Sunny Lane residence.

Atwater was wanted in relation to Fox’s shooting killing on July 11. According to police, at approximately 2:48 a.m., officers were called to reports of shooting in the vicinity of 185 Willow Street in Waterbury. When they got there, they discovered Fox outside with a gunshot wound.

She was taken by paramedics to a neighboring hospital, where she subsequently passed away.

Although the entire incident’s details are still being investigated, investigators believe a disturbance involving several people happened just before the shooting.

According to her family’s obituary, Fox was a student at Enlightenment School and was looking forward to going to the senior prom the following year.

“She was lovingly spoiled by her family and had a personality that could light up any room,” the family stated. “Known for her quick wit and sense of humor, she could crack a joke in an instant but if she saw you hurting, she’d be the first to try and lift your spirits.”

According to Waterbury police, Atwater faces charges of murder, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a handgun, carrying a pistol without a permit, and unlawful sale or transfer of pistols or revolvers.

According to officials, he was being held on a $3 million bond.
