As previously reported by Suffolk County police, Ishmoile Mohammed, 59, passed away at Sailors Haven on Saturday, August 23, after being dragged from a rip current. After being transported to Bay Shore’s South Shore University Hospital, he was declared dead.
Mohammed’s Facebook and LinkedIn pages indicate that he was raised in Wyandanch and went to Wyandanch Memorial High School. On social media, friends recalled him as a proud resident of Long Island who maintained his ties to his hometown during his military service.
He later served in the New York Army National Guard and the U.S. Army for over 20 years, eventually becoming a Master Sergeant. As a combat veteran, he participated in ground operations with an armored cavalry regiment during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield.
After serving in battle, Mohammed joined the New York Army National Guard, first as a recruiter and then as a Section Chief, stationed in Rochester and New York City. He received many honors and praise for his efforts.
Mohammed worked for Sklyline for almost eight years as a Family Assistant Specialist after leaving active duty, continuing to support military families. In 2019, he also graduated from Thomas Edison State University with a bachelor’s degree in Homeland Security and Law Enforcement.
Sergeant Major Eric R. Hunt, U.S. Army (Retired), who served with him, told Daily Voice that he was a patriotic American who served his country with dignity and distinction. He had a sweet soul and was a compassionate man. He always gave you a hug and a smile when he saw you.
